The warmest welcome of this year’s Ingles Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race will be saved for Mark Davies’ Lucifarr from Lake Macquarie.

The warmest welcome of this year’s Ingles Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race will be saved for Mark Davies’ Lucifarr from Lake Macquarie.

With 24 nautical miles to go to the finish at Southport, they are the last boat at sea from the 75-strong fleet that began this 384 nautical mile race last Saturday from Sydney Harbour.

This morning they reported to Sail World that their slow pace was largely due to the current they experienced off Nelson Bay in the early stages of the race.

“We were belted by the current and lost probably 20 places after we were sucked backwards, then the conditions stayed very soft,” said Davies.

“One by one the boats around us retired and now we are last boat on the race track. But we decided we were going to finish no matter what”.

They are due to finish late this afternoon.
