Just hours into the 25th Audi Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race the situation at the front of the fleet changed dramatically when Wild Oats XI’s bowman Tim Wiseman got his hand caught in the mainsheet block.

At approximately 5pm this afternoon Wiseman sustained the injury which was serious enough to warrant him being put off the boat at the entrance to Newcastle Harbour and into a waiting Noakes Newcastle rib which transferred him ashore to an ambulance.

Noakes’ Prue Harper said conditions were calm for the transfer from the 100 footer’s transom and that Wiseman was relatively composed although shaking from the shock of the accident.

Tonight he is in John Hunter Hospital receiving treatment.

Wild Oats XI has rejoined the fleet and is currently placed sixth having lost around 30 miles putting Wiseman ashore.

Dennis Cooper’s Sydney 36cr Amante has retired from the race due to rudder bearing problems and is making her way to Sydney
