Celestial off to a good start in the long game

Sam Haynes’ TP52 Celestial was the seventh boat across the line and fourth within the 52 subcategory after Ichi Ban, M3 and RKO. It was a strong result for the CYCA boat which is looking at the long game with the Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race the first of the Blue Water Pointscore.

For Haynes it was an enjoyable tussle between rival boats M3 and RKO who were within touching distance of each other for a substantial part of the race.

“When M3 was so close it was always going to be hard to get the edge on them. We got locked in a battle with RKO and that gave M3 another chance to put pressure on.”

“For the majority we were just monitoring speed over the ground and the current to make the best possible time we could and generally we were in good shape, it’s not like we left a lot of time out there.”

“Being upwind all the way it was a really tiring race, we were all pretty battered and bruised.”

“Overall we wanted to make sure we got a good start to the Blue Water so we’re in a good spot in our division and will be alright in the overall standings so it’s a good result.”

“It was important we had a positive first race and the crew worked well together which they did. We’re in it for the long run and we’ve started well.”
