For Paul Clitheroe, owner of Balance, he had rolled the dice on Saturday afternoon and took the decision to go wide, with the next roll being when to come back inshore. Offshore, Balance was sailing along quite nicely and maintaining good boat speed before getting caught in the thunderstorms. "That was one of the most intense thunderstorms I have seen in a long time, said Paul. "The lightening lit up the night sky - but being in the middle of a lightening & thunderstorm with an aluminium mast is something that when it hits - you know that it's one place that you don't want to be and it's paramount to ensure crew safety."

Ray Roberts recalled their race upon setting his feet on dry land "It was a fantastic but tough race. We had a pretty good start and were in a good position with Quest and Ragamuffin (the early leaders off the start line) and Yendys. We continued to battle with the other 50ft yachts over the first afternoon and evening."

It is anticipated that the lead boats will cross the finish line at approx 4am Monday morning with conditions at the finish line off Southport's Main Beach currently showing 5-10 knots W/SW, with a possible increase in the wind to 15-20 knots.

Wild Joe was also forced to retire due to rudder damage sustained to the forward rudder. Owner Steven David reported in after the boat was in port after assessing damage, "We were surfing off a wave at approx. 1.20am this morning (about 60 miles offshore) and we had good boat speed of 20-22 knots in 18-20 knots of breeze. We came down off the wave and hit a submerged object. The boat stopped dead and we heard the crack of carbon as we lost the forward rudder. None of the crew were injured and we made it back to Port Stephens. If we haven't sustained any keel damage we'll be up at Hamilton Island Race Week after further assessment."

Paul Clitheroe, media's money man has just fitted a new spinnaker pole and if he and his crew can figure out how to use it properly they are in for an exciting race. "There are three Sydney 47's racing in this race and the boats are set-up for conditions like this and they love the wind across the beam!, " said Paul. "I have been told by my crew not to be too aggressive so that I don't break anything - when we were sailing to Hobart on the first night I blew two spinnakers!"

Michael Logan, Manager, Bureau of Meteorology, announced the conditions that the fleet of 76 yachts may experience over the race period. For the start of the Audi Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race at 1pm on Saturday 26 July, light westerly winds of approx 5-10 knots are forecast. The outlook for Saturday appears to be mostly fine with a maximum temperature of 17C.

A fleet of top IRC racers including Steven David's Wild Joe, Bob Oatley's Wild Oats X, Peter Harburg's Black Jack and four TP52s, Syd Fischer's Ragamuffin, Graham Wood's Wot Now, Bob Steel's Quest and Alan Whitley's Cougar II, amongst others, will be jostling on the start line in a fortnight's time. The Audi Sydney Gold Coast Race NOR is available today to download. Kioni, is the first entry received by the Sailing Office for the 2008 Audi Sydney Gold Coast Race.
