Celestial

Celestial

Celestial is a well-campaigned Rogers 46 owned by Sam Haynes that was finished runner-up to Loki in last year’s CYCA Blue Water Pointscore. Celestial also won the Cape Byron Series (ORCi division of BWPS) and placed third in the Tasman Performance Series (PHS).

Haynes is on a mission and has his program has benefited since the addition of Steve McConaghy and his tactical skills. They performed well in last year’s Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race, with a second in IRC Division 2. Haynes followed up with a third in the Flinders Islet Race and scored a hat-trick of IRC, PHS and ORCi wins in the Bird Island Race in September.

In last year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart, Haynes was determined to make amends for his disappointing performance in the previous two Hobarts, and finished 19th on line, 22nd overall, third in IRC Division 2, and won ORCi Division 2.

Some will remember the yacht was previously owned by Victoria’s Rob Hanna and raced as Shogun. She did not show her potential, and Hanna, impatient for good results, sold her after realising some mediocre results. However, Haynes saw the yachts potential, and after cleaning the hull and doing a bit of tweaking, has found the boat a good one.

Celestial will once again be crewed by mostly regulars that have been with the boat since the CYCA sailor purchased it. She is once again sponsored by Sydney Animal Hospitals and Pirelli and is sailing to raise funds for Assistance Dogs Australia
