M3

What a wild ride Peter Hickson has had with M3 since purchasing the former Calm last September. In his debut with M3, Hickson took line and overall honours in the George Law Memorial Foundation Race in big winds. In the subsequent Fremantle Geraldton race, with a torn main, he still managed third overall. The Hobart race came, and just after the start, M3’s forestay shredded. Cougar, also out of the race early, offered their forestay, but after a crew discussion on the predicted first night southerly buster, they elected to retire. Instead, she competed in the Pittwater Coffs Harbour Race and finished second on line and third overall.

When owned by Jason Van der Slot and partners, Calm finished the 2011 and 2012 Hobarts in fifth overall - the best placed TP52 on both occasions. The Victorians purchased the boat in 2009 and took line and IRC honours in the 2009 Melbourne Stanley Race. WA’s Tony Mitchell bought her after Van Der Slot’s death, until illness claimed his life in 2014. M3 is repaired and skipper Brent Fowler is ready to race, as are crew members. Brett Van Munster, a boat builder renowned for his skiff building and racing, joins the crew.
