Black Jack

Black Jack

Peter Harburg purchasedthis yacht in early 2013 and continued the Black Jack name for his friend and Formula One legend, the late Sir Jack Brabham. Modifications were made to ensure the yacht was up to Australian standards before she made her Australian racing debut last July.

In her maiden Australian ocean race with new owner Peter Harburg, last year’s Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race, the former 2011-2012 VOR entrant Telefonica, finished third on line and third in IRC Division 0 following a tight tussle to the finish with the top two, Wild Thing and Lahana. Just a week later, Black Jack was second on line to Wild Thing in the Club Marine Great Keppel Island Yacht Race.

Black Jack surprised the super maxis in the SOLAS Big Boat Challenge in December beating Perpetual LOYAL and Wild Oats XI to the first mark, relishing the big breeze. Ultimately, she was the third boat to cross the finish line and third in IRC.

Just two weeks later in the Rolex Sydney Hobart, Black Jack battled with Giacomo, the former Groupama, winner ofthe VOR in 2011-2012, finishing fourth on line just two minutes and 17 seconds ahead of Giacomo, and placed sixth in IRC Division 0.

In April, Black Jack won line honours and finished second in IRC Division 1 to the Reichel/Pugh 66, Alive, the former Black Jack now owned by Tasmanian Phil Turner. In 2012, with the RP66, Harburg was second on line to Wild Oats XI to record the second fastest time ever in the history of the Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race. This boat also won line honours in the 2008 and 2009 Brisbane to Gladstone races.
