Luna Sea

Luna Sea

This will be James Cameron’s first major offshore race since retiring from last year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart after his little Hick 35’s spinnaker pole  broke and the rudder blade fell off in Bass Strait in the middle of the night in gale force conditions. Despite this setback, Cameron finished eighth in the CYCA’s 2013 Blue Water Pointscore Series, of which the Hobart is the final race.

In April last year, Luna Sea was third overall in the Gosford Lord Howe Island Yacht Race. In 2012-2013 Blue Water Pointscore, her debut offshore season for owner James Cameron, Luna Sea finished second under PHS and ninth in both IRC and ORCi.

This tiny yacht incredibly won the fatal 1998 Hobart race overall when owned by Ed Psaltis and Bob Thomas and named AFR Midnight Rambler. Her first owner, Victorian Bruce Taylor, is still wondering what could have been had he not sold Chutzpah. As it was, he updated and was one of the many casualties in that fatal race.
